Description
Build this jig and use it with your shop vac to secure partially turned bowls without fasteners, eliminating screw holes. Commercially produced vacuum chucks cost several hundred dollars. For far less, this shop-made chuck, powered by your shop vacuum, works just as well for occasional use. The chuck consists of two assemblies: a handwheel adapter that connects the shop vacuum to the headstock handwheel, and the chuck itself with a neoprene rim that forms an airtight seal with the curved bowl surface. A storage plate protects the chuck rim, keeping it dust-free when not in use. Note: To use this vacuum chuck, your lathe headstock must have a center through-hole with no intersecting holes.
