Like a best friend, this bed grows up with your child. Starting as a crib for a newborn, this 'sleep System" easily changes into a bed for a toddler, and then into a full bed, serving a child well past adolescence. Simple decorative connector bolts and concealed cross dowels make these quick changes possible. Build all the parts now and be years ahead, or choose any one of the three beds to meet current needs.

Excellent product but instructions could be way better

I've made two of these cribs from the exact same plans. One from red oak, and another from cherry. The plans are great with lots of detail - however some of the steps are not ideal - having you switch out router bits or dadoes (for example) when reordering numbers could have a better workflow.

I've had to make several notes and additions for a more comprehensive file and following of directions. Overall I like it, but wish it were just a touch better.

Great plans

I made mine out of American Cherry. It's rock solid, but I milled out slots for the vertical rails because cutting all those little pieces took a lot of time. I also used vertical rails on the sides instead of panels. The only machines I used were a table saw, a router and a handheld cordless drill. The plans were nicely detailed and fairly easy to follow.

3 - in - 1 toddler bed, modified

Rating:
Pros:
  • Thorough and accurate plan
Cons:
  • plywood for short sides
The plan for the 3 - in - 1 bed was very good, detailed, accurate, easy to follow. But I did make several modifications based on the preferences of the new parents. I squared off the headboard, and added more features to it. I also used slats for the short sides, as another reviewer did. The lower connectors are Rockler brackets instead of visible connector bolts.

3 in 1 crib great idea

Cons:
This is the third of these cribs I have built. One of ash one of mahogany and one of oak. The plans are clear and accurate. I have found no mistakes as yet. You need to read the directions instead of doing what I have done for the three times... just look at the drawings. The directions point out the order of construction that is helpful. They are beautiful when done. The assembly of the front/back to the sides is a bit tricky and somewhat frustrating so take your time. We have assembled it as a crib, toddler bed and double bed and all work well.

Very detailed. A little overwhelming to start with but so detailed, which is good, it took me a bit to get going. Not finished yet but making progress. I'm building it out of some walnut I've had for a long time for my first grandson:)
